Discover the Zărnești Bear Reserve
The Zărnești Bear Reserve (Libearty Zărnești Sanctuary) is a refuge for bears rescued from captivity. Here, over 100 bears live in a protected forest covering almost 70 hectares.
The sanctuary initiative began with a sad story, that of Maya the bear. Out of that suffering grew a place of hope for many animals.
Every bear has a story. From Alisa, blind after years of captivity, to Bam, still sucking his paw like an orphaned cub. It’s not just bears that benefit from this sanctuary. Wolves, deer and roe deer also find refuge here.
Education is the key to change in the future. Through this sanctuary, Millions of Friends is teaching lessons about the importance of protecting animals and nature. Here, bears learn to be wild again. Seeing them play or relax in the pool is an unforgettable experience.
Guided tours reveal the exciting stories of the bears. Learn about their recovery and life in the wild, recreated. By visiting the Zărnești Bear Reserve, you contribute to the well-being of these wonderful creatures. Every ticket helps care and feed them. They must be purchased online and booked about a week in advance. Access is usually only between 09:45 – 11:00, to reduce discomfort to the animals.
